I have a list of 54 free-to-submit search engines all linked on my site (see signature).
DanThies is correct in relation to the larger search engines. In time they end up spidering your site anyways. I never submitted to google and the bot visits me 20+ times a day, and I'm listed at number 1 for my particular keywords.
However, in relation to those smaller search engines, that many people over look but which provide a small percentage of useful traffic, if you don't submit you miss out.
