I would just have the <h1> tag with all its attributes in the CSS file. Why create sth like <h1 class="h1"> when it can be so easy?

But, question with regard to the attribute "alt": What would you put then in the alternate text for a spacer gif (if you do not want to leave it empty)? I struggle to find a suitable text.
