Well you would need more info other than that. You have to have a keyword to check to see what page they are on in Google.

A website could be on page on page 1 of Google for many useless terms, so how does that help them. It doesn't. That is why checking your competitors rankings using the most popular keywords is the best way to gain some info on how they are doing.

Of course rankings are only one small factor of success when looking at competitors, but it is at least one you can do without them knowing. Knowing how many sales they get and what their raw logs looked like would be 1000s of times more valuable than a ranking check.
