And YOU decide for ME what is a "proper" font size? For YOUR eyes or for MINE? On YOUR monitor or MINE?
Kindly let ME chose my prefered font size.

What if I chose to use a 1600xsomething and open several smaller windows? I get the same big font size although it is not called for.
Why not simply let the USER decide about the "proper" font & window size?

No, you don't *have to*. This is dependent on your designer skills.
On the other hand, I find most fixed width sites to be of a rather 'generic' type ...
