I guess I see this a bit differently than anyone else (except Ken, sort of).
Young, old, female, male, black, white, yellow, red, polka-dot, this stuff shouldn't matter for anything. It's about what you know as an individual that matters.
I know, because I've inadvertently misled people in phone conversations before they've met me. They talk to me, and I speak and conduct myself as if I'm well over the age of 30 (I'm only 28) and have years of experience and knowledge (which is true).
One customer, upon meeting me for the first time 2 years ago, said "you're so young!" I looked at him and said, "I'm 26. That's not all that young, is it?" "Compared to the way you think it is!"
In other words, it's not about age and gender, it's about attitude and what you bring to the table.
