I believe this is because the toolbar gets installed automagically with a large number of other applications that people try out. . . we used to call that adware!

It almost seems as though Yahoo Toolbar has surpasssed AOL at installing itself along side other applications as part of the "base" install; or it could be because one of the big apps everyone installs is Yahoo's Instant Messenger.
