Default dmoz, some facts and fictions

The Open Directory Project (ODP) dmoz is based on the "Open Source" philosophy. It has been inspired by, derived from, the Debian Social Contract http://www.debian.org/social_contract.html

It is administrated by Netscape Communications Corporation, that is part of AOL: http://dmoz.org/socialcontract.html

It is a free service made for users that want to browse for information. If you search for information, you shall use a search engine. It is a human edited directory with editors. Editors may have their own sites on the internet. Dmoz is not made for webmasters, but for browsers. It is open in the following meaning of the word. It is open for users, but not for inclusion. A new site should add additional value to the directory. Lack of unique content to add value to a category is by far the most common reason a site is not listed. Be selective when you submit your site. Try to find the right category. The best is to spend enough time researching which category is most appropriate. Most categories will have a description. Take the time to read the description and look at your site from an objective point of view. Use the search feature to check out where similar sites have been placed.

Submit once and wait. Resubmission owerwrites the old one with a new date

If you submit your site it does not guarantee inclusion, especially if the site is in a category where there already is a lot of sites, if I does not supply original content, is very similar to other sites or have a lot of affiliated services on the site.

There is no relation between searchengines and dmoz. I the SE’s uses dmoz their algorithms decides how. Trying to spam dmoz to get a higher ranking in the SE’s should have only one effect, increase the work for the editors in the same way as oversubmitting a site does.

If you want to know the status of your site, got to the dmoz forum http://resource-zone.com/ and ask. Do not send email, since editors don’t reply to emails.

If you are dissatisfied with an editor report abuse:
