Apple to start using Intel chips
Dorks, geeks, nerds and dweebs alike were all buzzing on Monday when Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs announced a gradual transition to Intel chips beginning June, 2006. The low-end models will be the first to make the move, with the high-end machines shipping with Intel processors by the end of 2007.
What does this mean to the hordes of Mac maniacs that refer to Intel as 1/2 of the "Axis of Evil?" According to Macworld editor, Jason Snell, not as much as you might think. There is already a way to run PowerPC-compiled apps on intel machines, creating intel apps to run on OS X will be much easier than making PowerPC apps, and beyond that, we survived a huge transition to the PowerPC chip from the 680x0 several years ago.
The biggest concern is the public perception that Apple is either going to fold, or be another PC manufacturer. Popular publications like to call for the demise of Apple like blue-staters like to call red staters "Hicks". Apple has a huge task at hand to waive off those beliefs and drive home that this is actually going to be GOOD.
Because of this move, you can see Macs get cheaper, software to be more plentiful, and significant speed bumps at regular intervals.
Just one dork's opinion.
