As long as your site has great unique content, it will stand a chance of getting to a top spot. The SE's don't care about the extension when they output the results.

However, from a user perspective, a ".com" seems to lend itself to more credibility, since it gives the perception that you "were there first" and any other tpe of extension is somehow devalued.
