What kind of Laptop do you prefer? and which brand ?

My friend is looking for a laptop so I thought I would ask people here for the suggestions...
here is the deal...
Usage is going to be for Mostly Programming, I checked Dell, Sony and IBM laptops
I liked Dell ones and Sony ones very much..
But i have heard people saying that IBM is the best, and sony ones are good in the looks but the parts they use are not good enough...
I liked small screen laptops i.e. 12-13" ones..
do you guys prefer small screen laptops for programming? and which brand do you prefer?
