It's all about branding and the type of company you wish to portray. If you are a small business that offers some type of commercial service or product it is essantial that you have a logo. Will it guarantee additional income? No. If you are a consultant or where your brand is "YOU" then it's not that important that you have a logo. Your are trying to sell yourself (services) not your company brand.
You can also think of your logo as a tie breaker. If you are bidding on a project and have great qualifications, references and can prove you can do the job to your potential client and you are in a tight race to win a bid your client will have a tough choice to make if you are tied with another company. Would you hire someone with a creative presentation and a fancy logo or hire the someone who did not take the time and effort to give themselves proper branding and/or recognition? If they can't take the time to do this for themselves what are they going to do for my company? In a job interview don't people wearing suit and ties give a better interview than someone wearing torn up jeans? It doesn't make them better but it gives a better impression. In such a competive world you need those little extras to make you stand out from your competition.
I am not trying to imply that you will not get a job because you don't have a logo. I am just trying to say that it's important to brand you and your company. Sometimes a catchy logo will start conversation between coleagues and that could result in a potential new client.
