I've never heard of it, but as you described it --- yes, it's playing with fire, and automatically generated web pages as such is spamming and should be burned with kerosene and buried. Put the human spirit behind your web pages -- pages with the purpose of providing society with content that can contribute to the www. Even if it's product pages, etc, great. But anything that is automatically generated for the sake of generating traffic is a nuisance, and I can't imagine any SE that wouldn't do anything in their power to rid itself of it like a roach problem. If they're not on to it yet, they will be.

I would steer clear of it. Hope that helps.
